Households urged to spray lavender around doors in September

ree

As the weather gets colder, Brits are being urged to spray lavender around their door and window frames. September is prime time for insects to start seeking warmer spots inside our homes, and one creature is on the move this month.

Spiders often move indoors around September when the temperature starts to drop. However, instead of using chemical deterrents that could harm you and the spiders, some scents deter the eight-legged creatures naturally because they cannot stand the smell. "Spiders dislike lavender’s sweet yet sharp floral fragrance," explained Daniel Steward, Managing Director at Shield Pest Control.

He said it disrupts spiders’ ability to track scent trails, which they use for navigation and communication. This makes it harder for spiders to find safe nesting locations, discouraging them from staying in the area, reports Ideal Home.

So, the fragrant flower can be used to make a natural repellent. Daniel recommended diluting lavender essential oil with water and spraying it around common spider entry points, such as windows and door frames.

Peppermint also repels spiders because the smell is overwhelming to their delicate sensory receptors, which makes it difficult for them to navigate.

Snug Scent recommends mixing both scents. To make the solution, add 15 drops of peppermint oil and 10 drops of lavender oil to one cup of water.

Then add a teaspoon of dish soap, rubbing oil or white vinegar to emulsify the oils, pour it into a spray bottle, and target key entry points.

You could also soak cotton balls in lavender oil and position them strategically around entry points or in key hiding spots. Refresh these regularly to maintain their potency.

If you have the space, you could try growing lavender in pots around your doors and windows, or you could place dried lavender sachets inside wardrobes, drawers, or under furniture to create an ongoing scent barrier.
